Sounds like you're in the wrong realms to me. My original BT duke spent ages
trying to build up a clique more loyal to him and his duchy than the realm
prior to the invasion (naturally not at all trying to lead up to a secession
or anything...).
Now, it may be that BT is (or rather, was) the only island where you can
still get away with those things, but I'd be willing to bet there's a lot of
people putting effort into changing that.
A bigger problem in my view is that you reach the top and there's nowhere to
go, and yeah, no incentive to continue. *cue King Louie music*
