I think the ambiguity is more of a benefit than a detriment.
I think the Ruler swearing to anyone is wrong (since this would create
an explicit loop -- the Dukes are sworn to the Ruler), but the other
positions have no one sworn to them (right?), nor do they swear to
anyone (or are they sworn to the Ruler?).
We already have ambiguity in the hierarchy. You are sworn to your
Liege, but you answer to your Marshal, who answers to the High
Marshal...or do they answer to their liege (which needn't be yours).
