Perhaps I phrased myself a little too delicately.
I believe that there should remain a class available for those who
want a legitimate an unassailable excuse for wandering around, making
contacts, with the intent of immediately or eventually using those
contacts against their own realm.
As it stands, without traders, if someone wanders around the
continent without specific orders to do so, they'll be seen as a
loose cannon by their superiors, and probably as a threat by paranoid
neighbouring realms.
Yes, you could make the character a priest--but then they are just as
subject to the whims of their superiors in the religion (who may also
be the superiors in the realm), and many characters do not have the
temperament to become priests.
Now, if several classes were merged to form a new "support" class
that could handle trading and various other interesting functions,
*that* class would likely have just as much freedom as traders to
wander the land.
