Considering that the majority of this game is based around feudal Europe,
the Catholic church would be the best reference amongst these religions
anyways.
Real religions aside, why would a game religion deny these positions to an
adventurer? Anyone can be a follower, but more specifically, priests can
attain any ranks. While it's not a complete picture, you can virtually view
priests as having cast aside their nobility, at least temporarily. They
seek no income from the feudal heirarchy, they travel alone, they have
regular dealings with commoners, and the only difference from them and the
adventurer, class-wise, is that they have been able to reach a status of
nobility.
Nobility is generally associated with a bloodline, or strong tie to the
lands in which they are noble in. If a roaming priest is still a noble, he
hasn't very well honored a noble blood by giving up his possessions to
socialize with peasants. Likely, he obviously isn't too strongly attached
to any lands under a feudal structure. So, how are priests so noble that
they are able to trump the status of an adventurer?
Perhaps something should be looked into where priests not only lose their
possessions, but betray the status of nobility in order to become a priest.
In addition, why not make it so that adventurers and priests have more
similar parallels other than simply the time pool?
