If estates were owned by the knight, then you wouldn't lose them when  
you left your lord's service.

No.  It's very clear that estates are *owned* by the lord, and he  
gives his knights the use of them in exchange for their services.

*That's how things were done back then.*

The family home is quite different.  It *does* belong to the family.   
It has nothing whatsoever to do with estates.
