We even had him in prison once!

So no, it isn't merely a side issue. I'm sure he had a plan to do it,
but that was easily thwartable (not sure if that's a word, but meh).

Yes, only a side issue in that Nate had been planning it for many
months.  The issue brought up was that it was not premeditated, not
whether or not stabbing a duke can be done
