If the rebels win, it's a glorious revolution. If they lose and
there are only a few of them, it's an insurrection; if they lose and
they constitute a lot of the realm, it's a civil war.
A civil war is also a good description of a failed *secession*.
Actually, one of my characters refuses to recognise the people and
regions who seceded from his realm as a *realm* and simply refers to
them as rebels...
