Try a brute force method, of barging in and making ure you get everyone to 
tell you everything and anything.

When I joined FEI I didn't have a clue in hell of what was going on, but my 
char made a few good friends, followed up my RP of wanting to be the 
greatest swordsman, realised the political aspect, debated tactics, and 
became the marshal. From there my char is now  now am the second ever member 
of the religion (aftyer the founder, of course), have had an ultimately 
unsuccessful RPed out relationship, won a tournament after about 5 months, 
has enemies, a hired merc assassin... who cares what the rest are doing, 
carve out your own legacy.

new nugget of knowledge it brings to me makes me a little bit stupider.
