No, they panicked.  That makes them scattered.

I strongly suspect you just missed the message about 6 of them being  
missing when you rallied them.  It would have appeared for a moment,  
just when you clicked the "rally your men" link, and you wouldn't  
have been able to get it back or see a message about it anywhere else.
