Why not either one, depending on the situation?
If a Joe Pigfarmer is the legitimate child of his parents (both Pigfarmers
themselves, but most definitely NOT of noble birth), but he *claims* to be the
legitimate child of Lord and Lady Fancypants, then claiming he isn't noble
because he's a bastard is inappropriate, as well as inaccurate. Joe Pigfarmer is
NOT a noble because he's of common birth, not because he's bastard born.
