I know this is a really old thread, but I just got to it, after being off
the list for a year or so.

Have you tried checking out lvm to split between the disks, and then xfs
instead of rieserfs? I noticed that this got me better database performance
than when I had raid and reiserfs. I'm not sure what it was, but it seemed
to be the same bottleneck that you were having, in terms of major delay in
write speed, and less so in read.

I've heard that the best solution is raid, jfs/reiserfs, and lvm, but I
don't have the guts to try it. Supposedly it gives you insane speeds, and
huge gains in both writing and reading.

However, don't take take my advice, I'm just a friendly little geek, here in
his own little world.

P.S. How big is the database? That could be affecting the write speed, and
reiserfs is known to have issues with huge file writing. xfs and jfs seem to
give a speed increase on that front.

Also, check out a DOM (Disk on Module) or a cheetah drive if looking into
new hardware. Disk on module has 0 seek time, and cheetah drives can majorly
decrease existing seek time. Since you are having less trouble with reads, I
assume that it isn't a hardware problem though, and won't go into more
detail.
