Something like this happened with Kingdom of Loathing a few years  
back.  The fellow running the game did what he could, apologized, and  
then tried to do something interesting with it.

I think you ought to send an in-game roleplay about a plague among  
scribes: bank managers dying off, whole slews of royal retainers  
keeling over.  Add a couple other effects to make things interesting.  
(e.g., make it really easy to forge region claims for a few days,  
reset everyones' voting preferences before the next election, add  
random bond amounts to peoples' accounts) And then let us run with it.
