As far as game mechanics go, I agree. Any lord can place any knight in any
army. In practice lords will place their knights where requested. The sponsor
can also ask/demand that the knight be reassigned to another army, and ask
the ruler/general/judge to step in and assist in getting the desired knights
removed and reassigned.

Now, if the sponsor is doing something with the army that the
ruler/general/judge doesn't like, then they are much less likely to help the
sponsor out. But that's the price you pay for bucking the system.

It would be nice if there were some mechanic allowing the sponsor a modicum
of control over who is in his army. At the very least control the dispensing of
war chest funds tos pecific knights. Why be forced to pay to support the troops
of some knight you don't even want in your army?
