I think this is a good idea, we need people to be more loyal to their
regions and take the centre of powers away from the cities and Duchies.
I'll repost something I posted earlier that hints on this idea. We
definately need to push away from the city/Duchy/Realm centre we're
currently on.
Currently I feel that the King-Duke-Lord-Knight relationship is a bit. . .
lacking. I would propose the following changes. I know the coding would
be a bit difficult and that some parts are idea's Tom has put to the side
before.
However I feel this would make the game more dynamic and add more layers to
our options as players to start wars and provide momentum for change.
Oaths between Lord-> Knight are for gold.
Oaths between Duke->Lord is an exchange of % City resources for % Regions
Resources
A King is a Duke who has enough Excess Gold/Food to "buy" an Oath from a
Duke.
A Capital City is the City to which Oaths are offered, should be
Townslands/Cities
All Knights/Lord can hire their regional troops in their Region.
Everyone can hire All Troops in the Capital.
Alter gold/food/stone (what ever resources) for City/Townsland/Rural regions
appropriately.
This way a Townsland Lord could be a "Duke" per se if he negotiated well
with a neighbouring region for an oath offer -- offering food in exchange
for gold from a wealthy mining region. Becoming a duke of a small
"Duchy/Realm".
Obviously this lends itself to two things: A lot of Lord vs Lord bartering
for positions, wealth, etc. As Richer cities would need the Lords of
resource producing regions to let the city function. Since each regional
Lord and Knight could hire their Regional troops a region is not
defenseless -- each Region could fund an army (if it had the gold) to
protect itself from more aggressive neighbors.
One can see how this would help out. With Estates each knight has a
vested interest in defending their region (perhaps Estate size adds a small
"personal bonus" to each tax day? Maybe in food that can be sold to the
Black market (or Lord or Cities) or gold directly to the Knights pocket).
Lords have more control since they and their knights can defend the
region -- but not very well. Larger cities can try to muscle into food
producing or resource producing areas, but at the expense that other Cities
or Lords may want a bite at the pie.
And of course there would be little. . . reason for Dukes to offer oaths to
each other unless one was a surpassing politician, or installed a friend in
control of the City.
The idea in the end here is to create smaller more dynamic Realms (Duchies
even!). With the addition of Metal/Stone to resources regions resources
become even more important -- and the money a Lord and his knights could
extract from more "rich" neighbours would become a fighting point. And of
course this could lead to Realms made up of even just Townsland and Rural
regions, rich in food resources who trade their goods away to cities and
that gold allows them to fund their armies to defend their lands.
