Not entirely: For old accomplished heroes, there is one last
incentive: three fame points for death. With my character Alexei, I
tried for months to get him killed in battle so that I could finally
close the book on him and get those points.
It would be nice if the option to "retire" a character came with some
perks beyond simply having another character spot free. How about
these:
* Send a similar message to the whole continent about the death of
rulers and generals as is sent for heroes.
* Give fame points for retiring characters who are currently Dukes,
Rulers, or other top government positions.
* Cash out the character's belongings/estates. The wealthier and
more prestigious a character was, and the more titles he'd had, the
more belongings he would have that would be sold by his heirs -- all
of that would go directly into the family coffers. (Basically, you'd
be trading in an old character for gold; the more valuable the
character, the more gold you get)
* Create in-game grave sites for important or high-prestige
characters in the region they died, with a one-hour visit option:
"You visit the tomb of Alexei Dolohov of Old Rancagua, and pay your
respects there." This would be great for religions: their followers
could make pilgrimages to various tombs. Depending on prestige, the
grave site could range from a simple grave to a splendid mausoleum.
I think that some combination of the above options, combined with
ennui and the reduced hours from old age, would tempt a lot of old-
timers to retire their old characters and start anew.
