I thought changing your religion to that of your people's was one of the
main ways religion was supposed to spread.  The (corrupt) lords don't want
to be thrown out, so they go along with whatever church is popular (like the
lords of Albania), and this gives the church power, and gives priests a
reason to preach.  I don't see why that is any less medieval than a
crusader.
