I think your definition of "early" and Tom's differ quite a bit.  My
infiltrator used tax gold to get up to about 25% or so and then went into
the field.  He spent veritably no time in the academy after that and had an
infiltration skill of over 70% and a family wealth of over 5K before he was
banned in 5 realms and decided to leave the continent.  Field training is
infinitely better than the academy.

Don't want your head cut off?  Don't go into a realm that has banned you.
