That's untrue.
We had aristocracy here (I'm in south america) as well as we had minor
families. The families of renown in Portugal were also the families to
receive prestige and positions here. The lesser families had a very
good chance of earning fortunes and gaining their prestige, but that
doesn't mean that they didn't struggle to get recognition among those
who were known in the metropolis.
Most characters that emigrated to Dwilight have a history. The guy
*can* play his Duke to be completely unaware of family histories and
fame, but all of those characters that have known each other, or that
have for years been characters that worry about status and position
would make at least a minor research to know if the family is
honourable and famous or not.
The point is - not knowing is allowed, but starting from scratch in a
new world hardly should be accepted all around the continent. You even
have a realm based on old comraderies!
