Dueling was popualrised later on for sure, although I'm no expert, in the
middle ages there was trial by combat and people could sovle a dispute by
pitting their two best fighters against each other (although that may be
moee from the many fantasy novels I read).

I think the swordskill is mroeo f a wepaon skill, especially considering not
all the unique items are swords, and there were other weapons used (such as
the lance, spear, mace, bow). Adventurrors certainly should build up a high
fighting skill after a long period of time, but as it is a noble I trained
for a month or two in infil and sword fighting and fought several dozen
battles with infantry never got above 40% swordfighting. Training at the
academy is expensive, and many nobles are occupied with other duties like
paying for the many expenses a unit has.
