Sounds about normal to me. But I'm sure your character can believe that no-one bitches about them behind their back if it makes them feel better :-)
 
Personally, I'd prefer to read the RP than have the other nobles writing to each other in personal letters with spiteful comments that I as a player have no idea about, and if it comes out, it allows me (as the player, not the character) to have more preparation to RP my character's defence.
