It can be done, and has been done - in a war, not a single battle. 
Delaying the enemy, using fortifications, superior tactics do make a 
great difference. I'm sure there are people on this list who have beaten 
a 2:1 superior enemy using strategy in one battle, and worse odds in a 
serious of battles.
