charge on an island where there's no diplomacy and no point in hoarding 
gold?

If you can't use your influence to do anything worthwhile and selfish, 
no-one will want it. So the loyal people get the positions and the 
island turns from a delicate balance of strategy (reminiscent of a 3 
player RISK game) to a mindless meat factory where armies are thrown 
against each other again and again so the stats rack up. For the people 
getting dropped from positions, who needs prestige? What are you gonna 
use it for on an island which, at least to me, would be exceptionally 
predictable and boring?
