Because in a Medieval European setting, religion meant God (or
Gods). I believe Tom has already said that your characters *cannot*
be atheistic. That doesn't mean "must be in a religion"--that means
"must believe in something beyond humanity". Whether that
"something" is Gods, ancestor spirits, nature spirits, or the Flying
Spaghetti Monster is up to you--but I don't think "the Oneness of the
Universe" counts as something to worship.
Now, Tom may correct me on this, but that's how I've always read his
pronouncement.
