I have to disagree!

Sticking *everyone* into religions adds ubiquity to religion.  At the
moment, religion is like an optional extra that some people toy with
(and a very few are dedicated to) rather than an integral, deeply
woven facet of in-game life.

Having 'being of religion X' be part of someone's background in the
same way as 'coming from region Y', introduces religion right from the
start.  They can still ignore religion pretty much if they want to,
but it helps spread the idea of religion from the outset.

No-one is born a scary warrior king of death and destruction.  The
majority of people who are members (and we're talking laity, not
clergy) of any religion are born into it.  Some chose to leave.

To change the default setting from 'no religion' to 'a religion'.
And, as I said above, to make religion more than just an optional
extra that a minority of characters play about with.
