No, I don't think it would.

I'd suggest giving them a short period (one or two weeks) in which
they can change religion once at no expense.

That way experienced players have the opportunity to search out and
join whatever religion they want, and can pretty much ignore the
starting default, but new players don't get force to make a decision
with no understanding.
