Unfortunately, that's a simplification. In our history, the Church
already *had* the power--politicians just tried to usurp it (and
often succeeded). The Church would later be able to reassert its
power and move back to the original doctrine, if it wanted to (see:
purgatory and the sale of indulgences).

Religion will never work the way it is supposed to, under the current
rules, unless *most of the members* of religions are willing to base
their decisions on RP, not on OOC "I want to win" feelings.
