I vote for keeping it since it's something that crosses national
boundaries and so provides a different context through which to act.

I do think that religion could use a little more maturing.

I like some of the ideas that have been proposed - giving new TLs a
default religion based on their region / family would help extend
religions.  Giving religions some in-game definition might be helpful
too, especially if, as someone suggested, peasants had some specific
religious leanings.
