Well the catholic church was just about the only thing left of the Western
Roman Empire in Europe. With the collapse of the central government and a
strong religion you'd get that kind of thing. Look to the east a bit and the
same cannot be said about the Easter Roman
Empire. More places on BM have strong governments and weak religions,
simply because the governments got their first and haven't collapsed.
