I like this idea a lot. My only (vague) concern is that a realm might 
stop holding/outlaw such events simply to give them free reign to 
question nobility without any major bad effects (this referring only to 
the hopefully small number of realms where "strip titles" is considered 
the option's name).

Tying into your idea about skills, you might not pay to use a crossbow 
but you would pay to hunt on horseback (horses and lances costing cash) 
with the offset of greater glory (new attributes, achievments?) and the 
skill gain idea.
