Maybe we could just all make a personal arrangement: Out of your 3-5
characters, have a maximum of 1-2 characters who care about peasantry.
The rest of them can just ignore the peasants, not caring one way or
the other, maybe feeling a bit outraged when a noble is detrimented in
favour of a peasant. But would also be nice if each family can have at
least one character that actually dislikes them. Of course it wouldn't
be a rule, and some families are already too entangled to change...
but could be a solution, and wouldn't diminish much the fun.
If we all have a few characters to play with, why do all of them have
to be humanists? (not using the movement concept here, just a
generalization so I don't have to write peasant-friends) My Ilya is a
humanist, and unless I make her go crazy, she can't change that view
now. But at the same time, she is a noble, and thinks nobles should
make sure their people is happy. No power for peasants, just respect.
Now Vanya has never expressed her point of view in the matter, and I
think she can be one of the ignoring kind, since, after all, she was
raised in the same nucleus as Ilya, and is not a revolted daughter.
The third character will have a more active position about them. Not
sure to which extent yet.
Anyway, though we cannot say for sure what did the nobles do
individually, we can say that overall, the majority would treat
peasants with disrespect, and even violence. Sleep with newly-wed
brides, extort taxes, have family members killed if they don't do
their bindings, or even just have them arrested for being in the wrong
place in the wrong time. So we can personally try to reach that
environment. And another good thing there: the ones who try to protect
the commoners can actually be acknowledged for it... Which I can also
bet that happened in the middle ages, for the better or the worse.
