The few times I have seen it used that way, the priests themselves want to help
out. And the religion lets them ("Our priests owe their allegiance first and
foremost to their realms, then to us"), if not outright encourages it. Or the
realm is getting wiped out, and a bunch of the nobles convert to priest and go
crazy preaching and inciting the commoners against the invaders. Sure, they
get caught like crazy. Big deal. They weren't getting any gold to hire troops as a
knight. At least this way they get to "fight back".
