Yeah, it might do that...or it might just make everything way, way  
too confusing.

And on top of that, it would make absolutely no sense.  Why would you  
be able to swear to serve Count Joe of Duchy A, and then turn around  
and swear to serve Duchess Roberta of Duchy B, and then swear to  
serve King Bill of Realm C (containing neither duchies A or B)?  As  
soon as you swore the second oath, you would be violating your first  
one.

That's just not how such oaths worked.
