If it gives the *choice* to the local lord at the first opportunity,  
that would seem to me to be the best solution...it would even make  
sense, I agree, to penalize those who abandon their region to stay  
with their realm.

When you explain it that way, it *does* make some sense to me to do  
it this way...

However, with the way 80-90% of the players currently play  
BattleMaster, knights automatically following their taken-over region  
will a) be seen as a bug unless you announce it game-wide  
(newsticker, or just a very clear message for the knights it happens  
to), and b) will be unwelcome even then, at least for some time until  
they start learning to think in these new ways.  And that will  
probably take RL months to years, if it ever happens, for some people.
