Something I left out of my original post on this subject:
It's not just for personal reasons that a noble wouldn't duel a commoner.
Noble *society* wouldn't tolerate a noble dueling a commoner.
The chief reason being the possibility that the commoner would win. The idea
that a single commoner is better than a noble in any sense threatens the
whole fabric of medieval society. Peasants are a different race. Their
*blood* is different.
A noble losing so much as an argument with a commoner would lose so much
face and status as to be effectively ostracized from most every other noble.
