I've seen people take different positions on this, and it's not something
that's ever been set in stone (to my knowledge).
If I show up in a new realm, it's feasible that other nobles in the realm
would know a few things about my family -- even if it's not famous (though
especially if it is).
This is less the case for adventurers, though, and anyone expecting a noble
to know anything about a commoner with some tenuous tie to the noble family
is in for a disappointment. I've actually gone out on the unpopular limb and
come down very hard on any nobles in Lasanar who go out of their way for
commoners -- one recently said she might go travelling to Belauterra to
avenge the execution of her peasant relative.
As a player, obviously I don't care where another player takes their
characters and I wouldn't stop them even if I could. But as a character,
that idea would be absurd to most nobles. Even the notion that our nobles
would know who their distant relatives of less-than-noble blood are is
far-fetched.
