I know for a fact you have.

The problem is is at the same time you've never seen anyone buying a 
title to get the title, you've only seen them get it because of 
heredity.  You the player know otherwise and you say it is because they 
bought it.  The character has absolutely no reason to suspect that, and 
that's where is leaves the realm of role play into ooc knowledge.
