You need a certain amount of gold for the passage to another continent, but 
the more you have past that, the chances are that the captain will 
overcharge you or whatever.  If you want the gold to go to use, it's best to 
either give what you don't need for passage to another in your realm, or 
send it to be added to family wealth.  Family wealth can provide a few cool 
things, to say the least; this includes the ability to ask your family for 
gold when you need it badly- if your family can afford it.
