Pity. I'd have thought an adventurer might be able to remember where he 
saw the monster tracks last before he took a break. ("Somewhere around 
here - i remember that tree! - ...")

The human mind is just more apt to remember a location than a longish 
string of random letters and numbers.

That's fine. "Grr... they were here, i know it! Oh, there's blood on the 
ground, i wonder if it's theirs or their victim's?"

If they have been hunted down, or they moved, or it rained on the 
tracks, you can remember the location all you want, you won't find them.

So, please, let the adventurers remember that stuff and expire it 
non-obviously - show the strings for 24 hours, but if the monsters are 
nowhere to be found after 6 hours, tough luck...
