I do like the traveling idea myself, it's quite fun RP-wise...But 
perhaps something else to spend money on?  Maybe shops for things like 
tents, rope, lamps, etc?  Perhaps silk tents (or at least "fancy" 
tents), and other higher quality goods (not necessarily things that work 
better, just that look/sound cooler)?
