I have seen several routes where I could spend on the order of 2-3  
gold to save one hour--or no time at all.  And my adventurer does  
*not* have 3 pieces of fine silk, 2 Broken Swords, or any unique  
items, nor has she seen any (except a piece of fine silk, but the  
money from that dried up a while ago).

She's gathered some, and fought some, but neither seems particularly  
fruitful most of the time.  My guess is that she just happens to be  
in an area that has a lot of *other* adventurers who have cleared out  
all the monsters and picked up all the items before she can get there.
