Diplomacy is very much a part of the game. If you don't like what's
going on with regards to war or alliances, you have two options:
a) join the game and change it. It requires diplomatic and other skills,
but you can do it.
b) play on a different island, we have 7 available that should serve
everyone's need.

And how, exactly, would you go about fighting the most natural instincts
of humans, that of banding together?

There already are all these things, and many more. However, 300 vs. 10
will always be a foregone conclusion, no matter what. The game would be
boring as hell if we decided the winners of every battle based on a
50-50 chance no matter what the troop strengths.
And in the end, that's what you're shooting for.
My mind is set on this. If you are gangbanged five-to-one, then you are
complaining about the wrong problem. The issue is not that a 5:1 fight
ends with the one beaten to a bloody pulp. That part is perfectly fine
and natural. The issue is "what the fuck did your ruler do to end up in
that situation in the first place?".
