[Discuss] Titles in Republics

This has always been a pet peeve of mine, and I can't remember if I've
posted about it before. Apologies if I have.
The government titles in a Republic sound to me extremely modern. I know
'Republic' is in some ways ahead of its time (and/or behind it, looking at
Rome) in a Medieval setting, but that's why we slap on a lot of feudal
elements. Though feudal republics aren't copies of the Roman Republic, they
are more closely aligned to them - a mixture of Oligarchy and Democracy -
than anything else.
I wonder what everyone would think about some actual throwbacks to the Roman
Republic, or else simply provide some alternatives to the current structure?
For example:
Roman bent:
Prime Minister - Consul, Praetor, or Prefect
General: Magister Militum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magister_militum) or
Legatus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legatus)
Banker: Quaestor
Judge: I like Grand Justiciar, but just to throw up here: Princeps senatus
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princeps_senatus) -- Interestingly,
Theocracies already use the Roman office of Pontifex Maximus
Another direction would be medieval Republics such as Genoa or Venice, but I
don't know anything about their government systems.
