Ofcourse, it was greatly depending on the continent, for example, most
realms in Beluaterra are lacking, while those on the South-East Island have
plenty of knights per region.

However, there's also the point which you gave, but it has more depth than
that. With my experiences as lord, there was nothing I loathed more than the
knight who had blind obediance for the king. *I* was, after all, the one
splitting my income so that the guy could finance himself. With
Jean-Olivier, he would typically ignore relatives of his political foes or
pretty much any standard knight, but when an infiltrator came along, he
knighted him the day he arrived (I believe), with a modest share too.

So while there's an continuum that determines how badly a lord may want a
knight, there's also the fact some of them have extra criteria, and for the
average lord, the knight that would betray his region for the kingdom
without a second thought simply has no appeal, his estates aren't even worth
the tax share.
