There are certain things that will cause a link to become invalid.  I don't think 
that resting will do it, but investigating and starting another hunt in the same 
region will invalidate links. Perhaps some other issues as well.

Following the last round of bug fixes to correct this problem, I found the 
hunting links to be very reliable. I managed to follow many more "recent" links 
than not. ("Recent" meaning links that I saw within 30 minutes to an hour of 
their posting.) Of course I also did run across the occasional 20-second old link 
that didn't work, too.

But since my advy died recently, I can't help out with any more theories or 
investigations...
