Wait, are you commenting about the _game_ or about real life? ;)
But to be serious: that _is_ what a lot of organized religions were used
for, several centuries of the Catholic church being the prime example, and
the split of of the Anglicans being another.
Which brings me to a tanget: can religions schism?

That depnds. Do you want priest to be *preachers* or to be *leaders in
the church*. Again, historically, Catholic bishops, the Pope, and other
religious leaders were often *also* landed nobility, and wielded
significant power in the church *and* in political circles.
