[Discuss] Another Take on Religion

So far I think the best ideas I have heard to really change how religion
feels and to encourage people to get into it are the following:

1. take priests out of realms and put them into an alternative realm that is
the religion. Thus they can only be messaged by members of that religion
and nobles in the region they are in. Leaders of religions would be
messegable like rulers of other realms are now. Being independent of realms
would make it far more likely for religions to spread across realms.

2. give priests opportunities to earn honour and prestige (like buros do
now). This will make the class less of a dead end.

3. give religions financial and military power (financial through tithes,
say limited to 5% or so, but for a large religion this would be a
considerable sum, and military through slightly more powerful use of
followers: incite riot, revolt, or something similar)

4. give religious leaders the power to excommunicate people. This should
damage the characters honour/prestige, and in the case of rulers or region
lords whose population is overwhelmingly that of the religion, should weaken
them or even cause them to be overthrown.

5. restrict the elder positions within a religion to priests only

I think only with this combination will we see the rise of something like
the Catholic Church. Perhaps one of the islands could be designated a
religion island (like the war islands) so that new options can be tested?

So far I have not been tempted to play a priest, but if there were more
options I would definitely try it.

cheers
