LilWolf's suggestion of Bad Behavior looks interesting. It's supposed to block the
bots *before* they get a chance to make edits, as opposed to filtering the edits.

This program is listed on the MediaWiki anti-spam features page.
It looks easy enough to install. You supposedly just set a few variables in the
config file, upload the Bad-Behavior folder to the MediaWiki extensions
directory, and add an include statement to the LocalSettings.php file.
