You can avoid getting captured by staying home and avoiding any/all
battles. It would be the same choice that heroes make, except every
character would have to make that choice at some point. Everyone knows
that when you get into a battle, there's a chance you'll get captured.
Everyone knows there's a chance you might get tortured while captured.
It's not far fetched to add to that "Everyone knows old characters might
die if tortured."
Character turnover is over all good for the game and when a character
reaches the age of 40-45, it has been around for a long time already and
has probably done many things it has wanted to do. And it's not like it
would be a certain death. Just a chance.
