[Discuss] Weird Secession Question

I have a question. Purely hypothetical, but definitely perplexing.

Lets say you have a duke of a non-capitol city. Lets say that duke is  
elected ruler.

What happens if that duke secedes? Would he/she just lose the  
position as ruler, and there would be an election in the original  
realm? Or, with the new rules, would the ruler position in the  
original realm be suspended, like if a ruler was imprisoned?
