Very. Monsters are, by their nature, frightening. Same for undead.

Yeah, it may be easy for you sitting in a comfy chair to complain that a 
single monster shouldn't be that shocking. If you can, try to imagine 
being a guy with a bow and a large knife and there's some 900 pound 
beast of razor sharp teeth and claws barrelling towards you. Once you 
_think_ it's looking straight at you, it doesn't matter much if there's 
5 or 36 others there.
